From the League Presidents Desk:
These two teams meet twice during the regular season splitting, one win apiece:Yankees 15, Bombers 0 (June 4th)
Bombers 2, Yankees 1 (July 9th)
The Yankees came into the Championship game with the best overall offensive record in the league. A regular season total 145 Runs For and 39 Against with a record of 11 wins 5 losses……(3 rain outs)
The Bombers arrived with – 143 Runs For and 64 Against with 14 wins 4 losses…(1 rain out)
Rome Bombers have been in the league since 1995, changing names a few times (Rome Checkers & Oneida Ltd Silversmiths). In the past five seasons won their Division a few times, been in the Championship game 3 times…..This is their first League Championship Victory!
Bombers Rod Nellenbach pitched in several of those past (Big) games and it was a sweet victory for him especially.
John Elberson has been a warrior for the Bombers and came back from an early season injury. He broke his left hand in the second week of the season (against the Yankees on June 4th…which the Bombers lost 15-0) and 8 weeks later came to pitch in his first regular season game back against the Yankees throwing a 1 hitter 13K’s win 2-1! In this championship game John Elberson came in and slammed the door throwing a 2-hitter and 7K’s in the last 3 innings.
The Yankees are a solid team comprised of current MVCC players/friends 18 to 21 yrs old. They hit very well and have a strong pitching staff while usually making few fielding errors. Rome Bombers took an early lead with 5 runs over 4 innings, capitalizing on 2 Yankee errors in the 1st and 2nd innings. The Yankees threatened a comeback by scoring 3 in the 6th cutting the deficit by 3….and in the bottom of the 6th the Bombers answered with 3 more runs. John Elberson took the mound in the 7th when the first Yankee batter of the inning reached first on an error. So, with no outs and a runner on first Elberson’s first pitch went wild and hit the backstop, the runner advanced to second. Then on John’s second pitch he gave up an RBI single to (“lefty” pinch hitter) James Ludwig. From that point on Elberson slammed the door facing the next 11 Yankee batters allowing only 1 hit, striking out 7 and walking none.
